Q: Can you tell us about where you’re from and your cultural background?
Zaida: I was born in Puerto Rico and raised in the South Bronx, New York. I grew up in a single-parent, Catholic home where my mother only spoke Spanish. She taught us about Puerto Rican culture through cooking, music, and traditions. For example, during the holidays we would gather as a family to sing plenas, a musical genre with Afro-Puerto Rican roots, instead of caroling. We would enjoy traditional foods like pulled pork, rice with peas, and pasteles—a dish similar to tamales, made with pork and adobo stuffing encased in green plantain masa and wrapped in banana leaves.

Q: What has been your experience working at CHP?
Zaida: My experience at CHP has been wonderful! From day one, CHP has challenged me to be the best I can be and adapt to the many changes that come with different roles. I’ve had the chance to experience versatility in my job, which has helped me understand various departments within the organization.

Q: How does CHP support employees whose first language is Spanish?
Zaida: CHP provides excellent support for Spanish-speaking employees. They offer access to translation services and provide materials in Spanish, which has made my experience more inclusive and comfortable.

Q: Can you share any memorable experiences from your time at CHP?
Zaida: One of my most memorable experiences was during the J. Van Story renovation project. Along with my incredible resident services team, we transformed residents’ lives by providing them with new, healthy homes. We were able to instill hope and motivate them to embrace a better quality of life through the individual services and resources we provided.

Q: What advice would you give to someone considering applying to CHP?
Zaida: My advice is to be honest and transparent—not only with yourself but also with the interview panel. Before applying, take the time to research CHP’s mission and vision to ensure it aligns with your personal values. And, of course, visualize yourself in the role you’re applying for.

Q: How has working at CHP helped you grow both personally and professionally?
Zaida: CHP has provided me with outstanding training that’s helped me grow in both my personal and professional life. I’ve had the opportunity to take on different roles, which has allowed me to acquire transferable skills and advance within my department.
